Empowering Your Mental Health

What is an ADHD Assessment?

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) affects every aspect of a child’s life, influencing their ability to make or maintain friendships, their family interactions, their self-esteem, and their personal safety awareness. However, with the appropriate support and effective treatment plans, individuals with ADHD can thrive and lead happy, fulfilling lives.

An ADHD assessment involves a comprehensive psychological evaluation that examines various skills, including attention, self-regulation, concentration, impulse control, and organization. ADHD can present in different subtypes, such as Primarily Hyperactive and Impulsive ADHD, Primarily Inattentive ADHD (ADD), or Combined Type ADHD. Understanding the specific subtype is essential for developing a tailored treatment plan and support strategy that best addresses youth mental health needs.

It’s recommended when:

  •  They are easily distracted
  • Has problems concentrating or focusing
  • Behavioural or conduct difficulties
  • Partake in destructive behaviours
  • Regularly acts impulsively
  • Trouble staying on task (specifically those that need sustained mental effort)

Types of ADHD

There are three major types of ADHD, each with varying dominant symptoms. These include:

Inattentive Type ADHD:

Inattentive ADHD is characterized primarily by difficulties maintaining attention and organization, which can be identified through an ADHD assessment or a psychological evaluation. It’s often associated with trouble following through on tasks. With this type, children or teens may daydream frequently and become easily distracted, highlighting the importance of addressing youth mental health.

Hyperactive-Impulsive ADHD:

The subtype is often marked by excessive physical activity, impulsive behavior, and difficulties with impulse control. During an ADHD assessment, it becomes clear that children and teens with this subtype often struggle with restlessness and impulsivity. They may find it challenging to wait their turn or think before acting, which is crucial for youth mental health and is often highlighted during a psychological evaluation.

Combined ADHD:

This encompasses symptoms of both inattentive and hyperactivity-impulsive ADHD, which is often identified during an ADHD assessment. It represents the most common form of ADHD diagnosed in children and teens through psychological evaluation. These young individuals may exhibit challenges in sustaining attention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and difficulties with organization and focus, all of which are critical aspects of youth mental health.
